What to Expect

Things To Think About Before You Adopt

Also, remember the 333 rule. Your new pet will have about 3 days of feeling nervous and overwhelmed. Then, 3 weeks of settling in time before they are fully comfortable. Finally, it will take about 3 months for real bonding and trust to occur. Once you've decided to take in a new pet:
- prepare your family (especially younger children)
- spend time with the pet (if possible) before bringing it home
- have a space set up just for them
- pet proof your house
- find a nearby veterinarian
- decide if you want pet insurance
- plan how you will introduce it to other pets
- make a checklist of needed supplies (food, treats, collar, name tag, brush, toys, etc)
