Vaccinations and Your Pet
We know that as a pet owner, the health and well-being of your pet is something that you take seriously. Your pets are members of your family and just as you take care to make sure you get yearly exams and make sure that all your vaccinations are up to date, the same is true for your beloved pets. Whether your furry friend is a dog or cat, the importance of vaccines is the same. At South Coast Veterinary Hospital in Laguna Niguel, our veterinarian offers complete veterinary services for your pet throughout its life.
Core Vaccinations vs Non-Core
Core vaccinations are those that are considered vital to the health of your pet. They are not the same for dogs and cats but they are none the less equally important. Non-core vaccinations are ones that are not absolutely necessary for every pet but your veterinarian may recommend that your particular pet receive them due to their lifestyle or potential of exposure.
Understanding what vaccines are and what they do for your pet is important. Vaccines contain antigens that stimulate your pet's immune system mildly and if and when they are exposed to the disease in the future their body will recognize it and be prepared to fight it.
Dog Core Vaccines
The core vaccines for dogs are distemper, rabies, canine hepatitis, and parvovirus. The rabies vaccine is the only one required by law in Laguna Niguel California. However, the other vaccinations are highly recommended to keep your dog healthy.
Dog Non-Core Vaccinations
Non-core vaccines include Leptospira bacteria, Bordetella bronchiseptica, and Borrelia burgdorferi (causes Lyme Disease). If you are going to board or send your pet to doggie daycare you may be required to prove that your dog has been vaccinated against Bordetella bronchiseptica. Discuss these vaccinations with your veterinarian to determine which are appropriate for your pet's lifestyle.
Cat Core Vaccinations
Core cat vaccines are rabies and FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia). Feline rabies vaccination is not required by law in California but is recommended.
Cat Non-Core Vaccinations
The only vaccination that most veterinarians may recommend for your kitten is the feline leukemia vaccination.
