Caring for Your Senior Pet

There is nothing like spending many years with a beloved pet. However, when they get older, pets present many health challenges. Dr. Gill and our team at South Coast Veterinary Hospital in Laguna Niguel would like to offer a few tips on caring for your senior pet.

Changing Nutritional Needs

Your senior pet’s metabolism will slow down. This will make your pet more likely to put on weight. Weight gain can aggravate many health conditions, like arthritis and heart problems. Talk to our veterinarian about a better, lower-calorie diet for your senior pet.

Year-Round Parasite Prevention

Hopefully, you are already giving your pet flea, tick, and heartworm parasite prevention medications. It is more important than ever to use these medications every month since a senior pet’s immune system is not so strong anymore.

Lumps and Bumps

It is common for senior pets to grow lumps and bumps. Soft bumps tend to be benign. Hard bumps, bumps that come open, or many bumps appearing suddenly should be looked at by our vet. These could be cancerous or signs of a skin issue. Be sure to note if your pet is experiencing any other symptoms like loss of appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Softer Beds

Your older pet is going to feel more aches and pains. Make sure that all beds are kept away from any drafts. Use softer and more bedding to keep your pet warm. Consider getting orthopedic beds to help soothe your pet’s old joints. If your pet develops a limp, it is time to go to an animal hospital.

Mobility Issues

Senior pets are not as steady on their feet as they once were. Make sure your pet’s claws are trimmed to help with balance issues. Use non-skid mats on floors with smooth surfaces. Your pet might start falling down the stairs or have great difficulty climbing the stairs. Carry your pet up and down stairs whenever possible. Larger dogs should have ramps to help get in and out of vehicles. A special harness can help you pull larger dogs to their feet if they have problems standing.
